Thailand

Day 4 of our cruise and we’re currently sitting in the 14th floor observation lounge overlooking the port of Phu My. This is the gateway port into Bangkok, but while it’s only about 100 kms a way, the local traffic means it’s a 3 hour bus trip. Given my previous underwhelming experience of Bangkok we’ve decided to give it a miss and spend the day lounging around the ship. Just listened in on a couple of quizzes and performed very credibly, with the biggest challenge being understanding the Brazilian host.

Tuesday was a sailing day, so we attended a couple of port lectures, whiled away a couple of hours in the casino, before heading to drinks with captain and crew followed by dinner at our private “retreat” restaurant. There’s only about 100 retreat guests, so it’s easy to get to know people. The restaurant staff know us by name ( courtesy of the ear ring thing) and have our wine on hand when we arrive. After dinner they fronted with a birthday cake and wishes. When we returned to our room, a second one was waiting for us.

Yesterday, Wednesday, we spent the day at Koi Samui which is an island off the coast of Thailand. We took a bus trip around the island, stopping off at a coconut plantation, one of the beach strips and some temples. A nice way of seeing the island. Quite hot though so straight to pool on return to ship.

We’re overnighting at this port tonight, so tomorrow we have a trip booked out to a town about 25km ( one hour) which has some floating markets. ( and temples).
