Airlie beach and the Whitsundays

I arrived into my idea of a perfect caravan park at Airlie beach. I’m in an en-suite site with a cement slab and path to my very flash en-suite. The slab is particularly nice as I hit the rain band heading out of Townsville and the whole area was very soggy for a couple of days. Couple of cloudy and really humid days followed, but now we’re back to sunny with a nice breeze.

Kirlews

The park has a morning coffee van as well as a different visiting food van each night. There is bird feeding each afternoon although I haven’t bothered as I have my own resident kirlews . A bus stop to town ( which is only a half hour walk via the marina anyway) outside the front gate and an IGA a couple of hundred metres away. Most importantly, the Jubliee Tavern, with the self proclaimed “ best gaming lounge in Australia” directly across the road. All in all a great place to pull up for 6 nights.

Tonight’s menu

Having said that, as soon as I arrived, I thought I would take advantage of my dog free status and head cross to Daydream island for a night – which, on arrival, I extended to 2 nights. The resort was a great place to spend a couple of days. It has a dozen or so resident wallabies who put up with being patted and cuddled by visitors including the 20000 or so school kids on holiday. Pools, beach, tennis courts etc as well as complimentary use kayaks and catamarans. A real features is the on site living reef – it’s sort of like they’ve built the resort around an aquarium. There’s a number of places you can sit, such as breakfast this morning, and watch underwater through glass.

Living reef

Despite all of that, apart from venturing out for meals and a walk around the island, I’ve spent my time in my room looking at the ocean, reading the robodebt report and recovering from my latest bout of midge bites. (And of course, watching some footy)

Heading off south tomorrow exploring Susan and Di’s on way to Agnes beach via Rocky.
