Weipa and the Morton telegraph station.

Friday morning we embarked on a 400km drive to Weipa. Our morning tea stop at Coen provided the first mobile coverage in 3 days so not a lot of conversation happening.

A fairly long drive into Weipa, made a bit longer by some stops for more bird watching. Now we’re all best friends, not only do we go bird watching, we admire each others photos in the bus after 🤬. Weipa is a nice little place. It’s owned and run by the mining company whose workers tend to live there rather than fly in fly out. Really good school and sporting facilities. Only a handful of shops serving a 4000 population though. Too hard to compete with the mine for staff. More wildlife in our accommodation at a local motel over night.

The next day we wandered around Weipa on the bus and took a cruise on the Mission river for a bit more croc and bird spotting. Our guide, Kate, had spent the morning preparing our picnic lunch.

That afternoon we drove across the Batavia station and NP to the Morton Telegraph Station. This is now a major stop over with a shop/cafe attached to the public caravan park. After driving past the CP, we pulled up beside a field of blue tents – they looked ok although we had been promised en-suite so I was trying to see how the plumbing worked. Anyway that was just Doug messing around. They are glamping tents offered by the CP and another tour group set up in them Sunday afternoon.

Around the next bend was a private campsite operated by our tour company. This time we’re accommodated in little dongas, surrounding the camp fire and with an alfresco deck for meals and general lazing around. Camp fire put to use over sundowners and joke telling. Best joke of the night. What did they call Winnie the Pooh after he died? Dead shit

There’s a public phone box at the entrance to the park. As it’s not cost effective for Telstra to empty money from it, it’s free. I tried ringing Greg in NZ but it wouldn’t allow an international call. Typical Telstra.

Welcomed rest day on Sunday. Couple of walks, and Olympics in the afternoon. And we ate. Another terrific young chef. This one learnt his trade traveling around Cambodia – wonderful.

And it was fantastic
